If you are facing an Outlook not receiving emails issue, the problem may be related to internet connectivity, incorrect account settings, Outlook synchronization errors, storage limits, or corrupted data files. Sometimes emails stop arriving due to outdated software or server-related issues.

Identify why Outlook stops receiving emails

It could be many different reasons. Poor internet is one, problem with sync settings or inbox storage issues, antivirus interference, or damaged Outlook profile files can all disrupt email delivery. Identifying the cause is important because only then you can apply the correct fix, it can be software, server or account-related. There are several effective troubleshooting methods you can try restore normal email delivery and get Outlook working properly again.

Step 1: Check your internet connection

No internet, no connectivity, no emails! Outlook requires a stable internet connection to receive new emails. Check in the browser if you can load websites, if the internet connection is unstable, restart your router or reconnect to internet before checking Outlook again.

Step 2: Verify Outlook is online

Sometimes Outlook switches to Offline Mode accidentally, which prevents new emails from syncing.

To check:

  1. Open Outlook
  2. Click the Send/Receive tab
  3. Look for the Work Offline option
  4. If enabled, click it to disable Offline Mode

After switching back online, Outlook should begin syncing emails automatically.

Step 3: Check spam and junk folders

May be you ARE receiving the emails but the emails are filtered into Junk or Spam folders, this happens to gmail as well when gmail stops receiving emails, its very common in almost every email system. Review the following:

  • Junk Email folder
  • Spam folder
  • Clutter folder
  • Focused and Other inbox tabs

If you find missing emails there, mark them as safe to improve future email delivery.

Step 4: Restart Outlook

If internet is stable and Outlook is online, and you can’t find your emails in junk, focused etc folders then let’s restart outlook and see if it works. To restart Outlook:

  1. Close the application completely
  2. Wait a few seconds
  3. Reopen Outlook

You can also restart your computer to refresh system processes and Outlook services.

Step 5: Check mailbox storage limits

If your mailbox storage is full or near full, Outlook may stop receiving or glitching with new messages, text only emails could come in and attachment based emails may fail because of the storage issue. This issue can happen anywhere, gmail, yahoo, apple mail etc and you can’t send or receive emails in case you have hit your storage limits.

To free up storage:

  • Delete unnecessary emails
  • Empty Deleted Items folder
  • Download large attachmentsthat are important to you and the remove from Outlook

This is a common cause of Outlook not receiving emails issues, especially for business and Outlook.com accounts.

Step 6: Update Outlook

Outdated Outlook versions can sometimes develop synchronization or compatibility problems.

To check for updates:

  1. Open Outlook
  2. Click File
  3. Select Office Account
  4. Choose Update Options
  5. Click Update Now

Installing updates may resolve email syncing issues automatically.

Step 7: Repair your Outlook account

Incorrect account settings may interrupt incoming mail synchronization.

To repair the account:

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Select Mail
  3. Click Email Accounts
  4. Select your account
  5. Click Repair

Follow the repair wizard and restart Outlook afterward.

Step 9: Disable antivirus email scanning temporarily

Some antivirus programs interfere with Outlook email synchronization.

Temporarily disable:

  • Email scanning
  • Firewall filtering
  • Outlook integration features

After disabling them, test whether Outlook begins receiving emails again.

Step 10: Repair Outlook data files

Corrupted Outlook PST or OST files can prevent emails from syncing correctly.

Microsoft provides an Inbox Repair Tool called  SCANPST.EXE, this tools comes automatically with your outlook install and is usually located in the Office installation folder (e.g., C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 for newer versions).

Run the tool and repair damaged Outlook data files if errors are detected. You may need to run it multiple times for complex issues.

Step 10: Create a new Outlook profile

If the current Outlook profile is corrupted, creating a new profile may solve the issue.

To create a new profile:

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Select Mail
  3. Click Show Profiles
  4. Choose Add
  5. Set up your email account again

A fresh Outlook profile often resolves persistent synchronization problems.
