You have a WiFi slow at night problem that starts every evening. Many internet users notice that their internet becomes unstable, buffering increases, downloads slow down, and specially online gaming or video calls start lagging during nighttime hours. In most cases, this happens because more people are online in your area because usually the internet connection shares the bandwidth in an area. You have multiple devices inside your home consuming bandwidth at the same time.

Why WiFi becomes slower at night

Internet traffic usually increases during the evening because people return home, stream videos, play online games, and use social media simultaneously. Think of it like too many people gather in one small room and you start feeling hot and claustrophobic. Too many users both inside your home network and then overall at every household or commercial zones working at night shifts within your internet provider’s local bandwidth circuit will cause this slowdown.

A WiFi slow at night issue can also happen because of weak router placement, outdated hardware, overloaded channels, or hidden background downloads running on connected devices. Though it is not time specific and it can happen all the time but we will still check that. If your WiFi router is already week, it will go even slower at night.

Step 1: Restart your router and modem

Turn off the router for about 30 seconds, then power it back on. This refreshes the connection and clears temporary network issues that may be slowing your internet speed.

Many users notice immediate improvement after a proper restart, especially if the router has been running continuously for several weeks.

Step 2: Move closer to the router

WiFi signal strength weakens through walls, floors, and furniture. During busy nighttime hours, a weak signal can feel even slower.

Try moving closer to the router and test the connection speed again. If performance improves significantly, the issue may be poor signal coverage rather than internet speed itself. To test that, use a Lan cable and connect a laptop with it, if the LAN connection is faster, that means your internet is not that slow afterall, you need to do something about your WiFi signal strength or extend the signals. For larger homes, consider adding:

  • A WiFi extender
  • A mesh WiFi system

Step 3: Reduce the number of connected devices

Too many active devices can overload your network bandwidth. At night you may consider disconnecting the devices with internet access that you are not using really, for instance your smart TV is ON but running just a regular cable TV channel, it is connected to internet, that may add to the choking. Or a gaming console is just turned on but you are not playing, turn that off.

Disconnect devices that are not needed and pause large downloads or streaming services running in the background.

Step 4: Switch to the 5GHz WiFi band

Most modern routers support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands.

The 2.4GHz band has longer range but the 5GHz band is faster and less congested, making it ideal for streaming, gaming, and video calls. You should be able to see both 2.4 and 5G in your available WiFi connections list, switch to 5G and see if that improves your experience.

Step 5: Change the WiFi channel

In apartment buildings or crowded neighborhoods, multiple routers may compete on the same wireless channel.

This interference often contributes to WiFi slow at night issues.

You can access your router settings and manually switch to a less crowded channel. Many routers also include an Auto Channel feature that selects the best channel automatically.

Step 6: Stop background updates and downloads

Operating systems and applications frequently download updates automatically during idle hours, especially at night. One of the devices at your place is downloading a heavy update and your brother’s laptop is completely loosing his connectivity, well he’s definitely not going to be happy 😀

Check whether devices are downloading:

Step 7: Update router firmware

Outdated router firmware can reduce performance, stability, and security.

Visit the router manufacturer’s admin panel which is usually an IP address like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100, you will need a username and password to access that page. Check for firmware updates. Installing the latest firmware may improve speed optimization and fix known networking bugs.

If your router is more than five or six years old, upgrading to a newer WiFi router may provide much better performance.

Step 8: Use a wired Ethernet connection

WiFi connections are more vulnerable to interference than wired connections. In my home, all of us use the internet on WiFi except for my son, he has a gaming PC and his computer is on LAN cable, he just DOES NOT like WiFi.

For activities like:

  • Online gaming
  • Video conferencing
  • Large downloads
  • 4K streaming

an Ethernet cable often provides faster and more stable performance at night. Sometimes laptops completely loose the WiFi connection on a regular basis and having a backup LAN cable is one of the options.

Connecting important devices directly to the router can reduce wireless congestion for the rest of the household.

Step 9: Contact your internet service provider

If the internet consistently slows down every night despite trying the fixes above, the issue may be ISP congestion.

Some internet providers experience heavy local traffic during peak evening hours. Run speed tests during both daytime and nighttime and compare the results.

If nighttime speeds are significantly lower than your subscribed package, contact your ISP and ask them to fix it, you may want to subscribe to a higher package which is a bummer but still a solution.
